Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Zweig, Stefan. The world of yesterday / translated from the German by Anthea Bell. London: Pushkin Press, 2010. Paperback, near fine. Binding strong and tight; book appears unread. 474pp., contents clean and bright. The World of Yesterday: Memoires of a European has been called the most famous book on the Habsburg Empire. Zweig started writing it in 1934 when, anticipating Anschluss and Nazi persecution, he uprooted himself from Austria to England and later to Brazil. He posted the manuscript, typed by his second wife Lotte Altmann, to the publisher the day before they both committed suicide in February 1942. The book was first published in the original German-language by an anti-Nazi Exilliteratur publishing firm based in Stockholm (1942), as Die Welt von Gestern. It was first published in English in April 1943 by Viking Press. In 2013, the University of Nebraska Press published this translation by the noted British translator Anthea Bell. The book describes life in Vienna at the start of the 20th century with detailed anecdotes. It depicts the dying days of Austria-Hungary under Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Karl I of Austria, including literature, the arts, the system of education, and the sexual ethics prevalent at the time, the same that provided the backdrop to the emergence of psychoanalysis. Zweig also describes the stability of Viennese society after centuries of Habsburg rule. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. 1st Edition. US orders ship with signature confirmation. April 1943 Viking Press hardcover 1st American edition. "This edition in produced in full compliance with all war production board conservation orders". Soft hardcover (contradictory as that sounds) with no dj, A LOT of staining on covers, spine and at fore-edge through whole book and near bottom edge (including some rippling) on some pages, including all photo pages and the pages around them, underlining and pencil marks on some pages, small (burn ?) stain near spine on 12 pages, fraying and chipping on edges, corners bumped, owner's name (artist Everett Raymond Kinstler) and date 1952 on ffep, separation on title page and starting on next to last page, pages tanned, and soil on edge. For all that, still quite readable but one should be careful with this wartime book made with cheaper materials than it would have been otherwise.
