Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 50 Pages. Stapled brochure type binding. No defects noted. Of all the historic highways of our Great West, not one was so enchanting as the Trail to Santa Fe. This Mexican Trace, as it was once called, offered more varied adventure, gave more promise of gay romance, and showed more of the picturesque than any other trail. Its long, wandering course led from the woodlands of Missouri over a prairie ocean, over the high plains, through deserts and mountains, to the strange charm of the New Mexican capital. Other trails offered quite as much hardship and adventure, and scenery quite as fine. But when the traveler reached the end of the Oregon Trail, the Great Salt Lake Trail, or the Bozeman Trail, or stepped off his steamboat on the Upper Missouri, he found himself among men and institutions much like those hehad left at home. The people spoke English, and wore the same clothes, ate the same food, and had the same customs as other Americans back in the States. Those who followed the Santa Fe Trail, however, at trail's end found themselves in a strange land. The Mexicans were a different people. Even the Indians were unlike those east of the Mississippi. The people spoke Spanish, dressed styles of their own, and all their customes seemed unfamiliar, and romantic. The climate too was strange. Today we travel by train, bus, or plane along the same routes the wagons followed, and can sometimes see the very ruts they made. The memory of the men who carried civilization forward over those ruts can never die, as long as American hold in honor the virtues of demoracy.
