97pp, [3]. With terminal blank leaf. Stitched within original pink printed paper wrappers. Worn, with loss and staining to wrappers, some marking to text, large portion of terminal blank torn away. Some occasional pencilled annotations/prices added. The first 109 lots of this 13 day sale of the contents of Holford House, which was - when designed by Decimus Brutus and built in 1832 for the wealthy wine importer James Holford - the largest house in Regent's Park, rather fittingly dispersed the deceased former owner's private cellar of Sherry, Hock, Champagne, Port, Madeira, Cognac, Rum and Whiskey. The entire sale, as this catalogue attests, totalled over 2000 lots, and included choice examples of contemporary furniture, furnishings, antiques, art, and a library. The latter was disposed of in 68 lots (several of which including multiply volumes) on the seventh day of the sale, and featured largely nineteenth-century works. Amongst novelists featured were Scott, Edgeworth, Fieldin and Sterne, whilst political economists and historians included Smith and Gibbon. Choice luxury works listed in folio format included Boydell's large paper Shakespeare in nine volumes (London, 1802) with a further plate volume, and the ever-popular Foreign Field Sports with '110 coloured illustrations' (London 1813). COPAC locates no copies in British institutions, and OCLC adds just the single, extra-illustrated example at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Size: Quarto.
Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). The ninth edition of this uncommon cookery book for housekeepers in the eighteenth century, writing by Sarah Harrison. Last seen at auction in 2008. The ninth edition of this work. An uncommon work. Last seen at auction in 2008. ESTC citation number N17342. Bound without the front endpaper. This work is a duodecimo. The signatures run as [a1], A1, B-K12, A-B6. 'The House-keeper's Pocket-Book, and Compleat Family Cook' is a standard cookery work first published in 1733. It was a popular work when it was originally published, at a time when cookery books was a burgeoning genre and market. This work shows the common sensibility of trying to recommend ingredients that were of moderate price, and easy for a housekeeper or cook to get their hands on. Thus the author presents recipes which show elegance in eating, whilst in no way hindering frugality or good conduct. This helped the work's popularity among the public, as it didn't work to exclude those who couldn't afford certain ingredients. The author also offers information on what foods are in season throughout the year, and also presents monetary tables for people who were not mathematically inclined. Written by Sarah Harrison, who was active between the years 1733 and 1777. Very little is known about her life. Newspaper clipping tipped onto the front pastedown, from the Bromley and Kentish Times on 3rd July 1970, as stated by an ink inscription under the clipping. The newspaper clipping is titled 'Cook book of 1778', and the article discusses a 1778 copy of 'The Experienced English Housekeeper' by Elizabeth Raffald, a work which ran to thirteen editions. A ninth edition of this useful cookery book. Rebacked in a quarter cloth binding with leather to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Marks to the front joint. Lacks front endpaper. Newspaper clipping and prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Small chip and closed tear to the tail of leaf H6. Light dampstaining to the last few pages. Very Good. book.

[London] : s.n., 1840. Octavo (225 x 143 mm), [4] pp; contemporary ink annotation beside lot 11 "East India"; a couple of small closed tears, light foxing. Apparently unrecorded, this unassuming little catalogue is a record of the sale by auction of wines from the deceased estate of Londonwine and brandy merchant, Joseph Steavenson. A note on the title-page reads: "The Wines are now laying at No. 86, Lisson Grove, where they have been bricked up the last TEN YEARS, and where they may be Viewed on Monday prior to the Sale . when Samples may be had on payment." The sale was conducted at the late Mr. Steavenson's Grosvenor Square residence by Samuel Lahee of New Bond Street, a well-known auctioneer and house agent. Among the sixty lots offered for sale, most of which comprise fortified wines - port, sherry, madeira, or brandy - are eight bottles of port from 1780, a bottle of "very fine sound" West Indian madeira, and "a very superior wine, bottled in 1805", which the catalogue owner notes is from "East India". However, by far the most significant - and surprising - lot in the sale is lot 57: "Ratafia, 6 bottles, of the Stock that went the voyage round the world with the late Sir Joseph Banks." Official records show that the cargo of the Endeavour, the ship in which Cook discovered the east coast of New Holland in 1770 on his first voyage(1768-1771), contained 250 barrels of beer, 44 barrels of brandy and 17 barrels of rum. It was common practice in this era, however, for naval officers to bring their own supplies of alcohol on board. In the case of the gentleman naturalist Joseph Banks, this meant a supply of his favourite tipple, ratafia. A fortified wine, ratafia is a type of mistelle made by adding marc brandy to fermenting grapes in order to arrest fermentation and leave some residual sweetness.
