First edition, first printing, inscribed by the translator on the title page, "with affectionate ricordi, to Bob Giroux, Robert Fitzgerald". The prestigious editor Robert Giroux (1914-2008) was godfather to Fitzgerald's third child, Maria, together with their mutual friend Flannery O'Connor. As O'Connor's literary executor, Fitzgerald and Giroux collaborated on posthumous publications of her work. Robert Fitzgerald (1910-1985) was a masterful translator of classical epic and drama; his skill as a poet produced beautifully rendered versions of the Greek and Latin verse. His Odyssey (1961), the work of a decade during which he lived in Italy, won the first Bollinger Award for translated poetry. This copy, from Giroux's estate, includes loosely inserted ephemera from the Fitzgerald family: a copy of the order of service for Robert's funeral, two seasonal greetings cards from Robert's third wife, Penny, addressed to Giroux and "Charlie" (presumably his partner Charles Reilly), and a holiday card from Maria. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver, blind stamp of Virgil to front board, red endpapers, fore and bottom edges uncut. Text printed in red and black. A few short closed tears and creases to jacket edges, unclipped: a fine copy in very good jacket.
