Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Throughout his distinguised career, Patrick Moore has, without a doubt, done more to raise the profile of astronomy amoung the British public than any other figure in the scientific world. As the presenter of The Sky at Night on BBC television for nearly 50 years he was honoured with an OBE in 1968 and a CBE in 1988. In 2001 he was knighted 'for services to the popularisation of science and to broadcasting'. The BBC first aired The Sky at Night in April 1957 and it is now in the record books as the world's longest running TV series with the same presenter. He is also the author of over 60 books on astronomy, all of which, including his autobiography have been written on his 1908 typewriter. Partly thanks to his larger-than-life personality, Sir Patrick's own fame extends far beyond astronomical circles. A self-taught musician and talented composer, he has displayed his xylophone-playing skills at the Royal Variety Performance and as a passionate supporter of cricket, he has played for the Lord's Taverners charity cricket team. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Do you remember collecting shrapnel and listening to Childrens Hour? Carrying gas masks or sharing your school with evacuees from the city? The 1940s was a decade of great challenge for everyone who lived through it. The hardships and fear created by a world war were immense. Britains towns and cities were being bombed on an almost nightly basis, and many children faced the trauma of being parted from their parents and sent away to the country to live with complete strangers. For just over half of this decade the war continued, meaning food and clothing shortages became a way of life. But through it all, and afterwards, the simplicity of kids shone. From collecting bits of shot-down German aircraft to playing in bomb-strewn streets, kids made their own fun. Then there was the joy of the second half of the 1940s, when fathers came home and the magic of normal life returned. This trip down memory lane will take you through the most memorable and evocative experiences of growing up in the 1940s. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Bright and colourful, slow and easy, narrowboats are seen today as the epitome of a peaceful life and a wonderful way to get away from the stresses of modern living. Although true, this is a far cry from their origins as the workhorses of the early days of industrial revolution, without which Britain may never have developed as far and fast as it did. Packed with colourful illustrations and little known snippets of information, this entertaining and informative guide retraces the story of how narrowboats have evolved, how their very existence was once challenged and how they have risen phoenix-like into the holiday craft of today. Nick Corble is a renowned canal expert and has written a number of books on the waterways for The History Press, including James Brindley: The First Canal Builder and Living Aboard, the definitive guide for anyone contemplating making a life afloat. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Under the headings of 'Narrative of Law and Crime' and 'Narrative of Accident and Disaster' may be found an astonishing catalogue of terrible, grisly and most dreadful Victorian events. Fires and railway disasters abound; shipwrecks, floods and 'horrible affairs' leap from every page. Some of the crimes would surprise even the most ardent fan of crime fiction - it is doubtful that so many cases of such shocking violence and awful ingenuity have been collected together in one volume since. With a terrifying tale for every day of the year, Dickens' Dreadful Almanac will delight lovers of his work everywhere. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This collection on the Rhondda concentrates on Porth, the gateway to the two valleys, and the Rhondda Fach, from Ynyshir to Maerdy. Authors Also Baccheta and Glyn Rudd have assembled a splendid mix of images providing an insight into several aspects of the life of these communities and their inhabitants: at work, on strike, in poverty and at leisure. One thing is again clear from this selection: that the people of Rhondda have always known how to entertain themselves. The century and a half of mining activity in the area is illustrated in detail and the many pictures of the individual pits, the colliers and their families remind us that this was not so very long ago a dominant industry that shaped both landscape and culture. Comparisons of then and now which appear in each chapter bring home to the reader how much that has disappeared, but as Rhondda battles to reinvent itself, we can draw strength from knowledge of the past achievements outlined in these pages. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Lost Generation of the First World War were boys who had barely left school before they found themselves living in trenches, drowning in mud and living in constant fear of death. This unique collection of letters from a group of schoolboys who attended Bournemouth Grammar pays tribute to these boys who barely had the chance to become men. Bournemouths grammar school was founded in 1901. Tragically, all boys who were pupils there in its first decade grew up to be of fighting age in the bloodiest war in history. Ninety-eight of them were killed, averaging about one death every fortnight throughout that conflict. However, it was not all unrelieved blood and slaughter. Life was hard, but often full of interest and surprise. Many of them wrote back to Tig their much-respected headmaster to tell him of their wartime adventures. Collectively, these letters provide a wide spectrum of the Great War. We read of young men enjoying trying to catch rats in the trenches, winning bets on how long it would take to rescue a tank from no mans land, playing footer amid the gunfire, and singing ragtime in a rickety new-fangled aeroplane while rocking the machine in time to it. This is the voice of the Lost Generation. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Staffordshire boasted one of the first dedicated aerodromes in Great Britain when, in 1910, Dunstall Park, Wolverhampton, hosted the first ever All British Flying Meeting. Since then, flying has always featured in the county. In the First World War Dunstall Park was joined by other aerodromes at Perton and Halford Lane, Smethwick, and even during the demise of flying in the 1920s, itinerant joy flight operators and flying circuses still operated. During the 1930s municipal airports were established at Walsall, Stoke and Wolverhampton, where the new Boulton Paul Aircraft Factory was built. The Second World War saw an explosion of airfield construction across Staffordshire as important training bases were built. After 1945 only RAF Lichfield remained in use, although RAF Hixon was used as a sub-site for the RAF Depot at Stafford. Then, in 1956, Boulton Paul reopened disused airfields in the area when they made RAF Seighford their Test Flight Centre. Since then, although the three municipal airports have closed, private flying is becoming ever more popular and airfields such as Tatenhill, Penkridge and Halfpenny Green are thriving once more. This fascinating collection of over 200 photographs vividly chronicles the highs and lows of flying in Staffordshire and the Black Country. From pictures of an early aviation meeting at Burton on Trent to the frenetic activity of the Second World War and the microlights of today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Katharine of Aragon is a proud Spanish beauty who became Queen of England. From the moment of Katharine's betrothal to Arthur, Prince of Wales, she looked upon herself as the future Queen of England. But, Arthur died just after their marriage and it was as the wife of his brother, Henry VIII, that she went to her Coronation. This delightful, richly tapestried novel tells of her life with Henry - the many happy years; the birth of their daughter, Mary Tudor; her popularity with the people and, above all, her constant and unswerving love for the King. But after nearly twenty years, Henry - his eyes affixed firmly on the ambitious young Anne Boleyn - repudiated their marriage, submitted Katharine to the humilations of a 'trial' and banished her from his life. "The King's Pleasure" is a brilliant re-creation of one of history's greatest tragedies. This is a story which will impress Katharine in the reader's mind as a noble woman and great Queen. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. If It Moves, Salute It! relays the uproarious experiences of a young man in the navy during the twilight years of National Service, the late 1950s. A series of encounters help to influence his progress from raw recruit to reluctant adulthood, encompassing his journey through the hazards of training to a submarine depot ship during a visit to Belfast during 'the troubles', a WW2 sub in the Mediterranean, and on a high-profile tour of Scandinavia where he fell in love. The memoir also reveals service life, dress and traditions as they were at the time, many now abandoned or replaced from the modern fighting forces. After clashing with authority on the first day, Mike Perris resolved to keep out of further trouble during the remainder of his call up - a commitment he singularly failed to achieve. After surviving a disastrous security exercise and a simulated atomic bomb attack on a reserve fleet ship, he found that life in the forces was just as eventful off duty as on. This is a lively account of time spent in the navy at the end of Britain's National Service era. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The buzz surrounding this young man had been growing, but no one could have been prepared for the way he in which exploded onto the Formula One scene with podium finishes in his first nine races, including wins in Canada and the United States, to become the youngest person ever to top the drivers' championship. Allegations of illicit team orders in Monaco, and a cloak-and-dagger espionage scandal involving McLaren and rivals Ferrari, added spice to a season in which F1 was gloriously thrust back into the limelight, while the sometimes fractious relationship between Hamilton and his teammate Fernando Alonso also made headlines. But the biggest story of all has been Hamilton himself, and many within F1 are now predicting that this young man will dominate the scene for years to come. In this book, Gareth Rogers chronicles the rise of British sport's new superstar, charting his early days and his progression from karts to cars, followed by the whirlwind success of his record-breaking first season. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. At 19, Isambard Kingdom Brunel was in charge, under his father, of an engineering work that is the wonder of Europe: the Thames tunnel, completed in 1843. This book traces Brunel's life and career, the man of immense energy who came to dominate civil engineering in the 19th century and whose legacy can still be seen nearly two centuries later. L.T.C. Rolt was one of the first narrative historians, an industrial pioneer and preservationist. During his life he was fundamental in establishing and promoting canals, waterways and railways. He was one of the first people in modern Britain to draw attention to the value of our canals as a means of transport and a source of pleasure. As well as his interest in canals he also turned his attention to neglcted railways and set up the first organisation to save and run a railway with a mainly volunteer workforce.
