Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Scribner. Paperback. At 35, despite his determination to be different from his parents, the author found his life echoing theirs; he was a twice-divorced absent father with three young children, one in the UK and two in Australia. In this searingly frank, moving and painfully funny memoirt, Self documents his efforts to break the family mould and become a different kind og parent. It is highly personal in its discussion of alcohol, drug and sexual abuse, filled with extraordinary characters and events, but also universal in describing the pain of separation from one's children, the best intentions gone awry, and the sins of the parents condemning the children. Ultimately it is a story filled with love and hope. 247 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Poor condition only because this copy is missing all pages between the fly-title page and the list of illustrations on vii, including the title page and the publication page (The 1948 date is a guess used to distinguish this copy from recent reprints with ISBNs and stock publisher photos that are added by Abebooks to editions without a stated year of publication.) Otherwise a good plus small 4to (9-1/8" tall x 7") hardcover in NO dj. Blue boards with a blue publisher's design on an embossed gilt text block on the upper board, gilt spine lettering. The boards bottom corners are lightly bumped and rubbed; the spine is somewhat sun faded and the spine edges lightly rubbed with just a touch of fraying. The spine and lower board have a few very faint or small soiling spots but this is minimal. The text pages are somewhat yellowed but unmarked; all nine color plates are present and sharp! Starter before the illustration list; remaining contents are firmly bound. NOT an ex-library!.

As engagement with the Iraqis drew near, he was forced to consider what it means to be an American, a soldier, a son of a soldier, and a man.
