Small 4to; original oatmeal boards; price-clipped laminated pictorial dustwrapper; unpaginated; 154 period photographs. Dustwrapper very slightly worn at head of spine panel; light foxing to endpapers and reverse of dustwrapper. Very good condition. "The earliest photographs in this book show Market Street and Duke Street as they were about 120 years ago. The latest, taken some 70 years later, records a portent: a solid-tired mail van in collision with a lamp standard in 1909. Between these dates the pictures reflect with uncanny verisimilitude the changing life of Brighton at a period when, by present-day standards, change seems imperceptible. . Besides Brighton itself, it should be emphasised, the book includes Hove, Shoreham, Portslade, Roedean, Lewes, and Rottingdean. The photographs have been selected principally from the collection, consisting of several thousand items, of Mr J. S. Gray (who has also contributed the information for the picture captions). Sir John Betjeman's introduction, while setting the scene for the illustrations, suggests something of the part which Brighton played in his own early days.".

Cloth, 4to, x, 262 pp, over 100 ills (some colour), An excellent survey of the significant publications in all fields of science in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. After an opening chapter on the Scientific Movement in the early 17th century, Knight goes on to discuss the founding of the Royal Society, and the consequences, bibliographic and otherwise , that flowed from this. Succeeding sections discuss Natural Theology, Newtonian Physics, 18th Century Industrial Revolution, Chemistry in the Romantic Period, and the Decline of Science. Concludes with three chapters on the 19th century : Biology and Geology, the Diffusion of Science, and Scientific Publications. From the blurb: "The collector of scientific books will particularly value the extended bibliographies which follow each chapter. More than one hundred colour and black-and-white illustrations have a similar bibliographic importance - quite apart from the outstanding technical and aesthetic qualities which nearly all the pictures reflect.
