Juni 2011 in Paris) war ein spanischer Schriftsteller. Sein literarisches Werk (meist in französischer Sprache geschrieben) ist gekennzeichnet vom Anschreiben gegen das Vergessen. Als ehemaliger Widerstandskämpfer in der französischen Résistance und gegen die Franco-Diktatur in Spanien blieb er, trotz aller politischen Wandlungen, der Moral des kollektiven Widerstands treu und brachte in seinen überwiegend autobiografischen Schriften eine humane Anklage gegen die Grausamkeiten von Exil, Krieg und Deportation zum Ausdruck. Er trat 1941 der kommunistischen Résistance-Organisation Francs-tireurs et partisans bei und wurde ein Jahr später Mitglied der Kommunistischen Partei Spaniens (PCE). Bei seiner Arbeit im Untergrund gegen die deutschen Besatzer wurde Semprún 1943 in Auxerre von der Gestapo verhaftet und nach Verhören und Folter im Januar 1944 in einem Viehwaggon in das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald deportiert. Im KZ Buchenwald beteiligte er sich am lagerinternen, von den Kommunisten aufgebauten Widerstand. Da Semprún vor der Verhaftung bereits im Exil gelebt hatte, erkannte ihn das faschistische Regime Francos nicht als spanischen Staatsbürger an. So wurde er als Staatenloser erfasst. Semprún nahm die spanische Staatsbürgerschaft nach der Demokratisierung Spaniens wieder an. Nach der Befreiung des KZ Buchenwald kehrte er nach Paris zurück. Die Deportation und die Gefangenschaft verarbeitete er später in den Romanen Die große Reise (1963) und Was für ein schöner Sonntag! (1980). Elie Wiesel (geboren am 30. September 1928 in Sighetu Marmatiei, Königreich Rumänien; gestorben am 2. Juli 2016 in New York City, Vereinigte Staaten) war ein rumänisch-US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Hochschullehrer und Publizist. Als Überlebender des Holocausts verfasste er zahlreiche Romane und sonstige Publikationen zu diesem Thema und erhielt 1986 den Friedensnobelpreis für seine Vorbildfunktion im Kampf gegen Gewalt, Unterdrückung und Rassismus. Wiesel wuchs in einem stark von orthodoxen Juden beeinflussten Umfeld auf. Er besuchte die Schule in seinem Heimatort und wurde im Mai 1944, im unter deutscher Vorherrschaft stehenden Ungarn von den Nationalsozialisten gemeinsam mit seiner Familie in das Stammlager des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz deportiert. Nach drei Wochen wurde er mit seinem Vater in das Lager Auschwitz-Monowitz verlegt. Später kam er in das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald, aus dem er am 11. April 1945 von US-amerikanischen Truppen befreit wurde. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging Wiesel nach Straßburg und lernte Französisch. Von dort ging er zum Studium an die Sorbonne in Paris. Neben anderen Einflüssen spiegelt Wiesels Denken auch sein eingehendes jahrzehntelanges Talmudstudium, unter anderem bei den Rabbinern Mordechai Schuschani (Paris) und Saul Lieberman (New York), wider.
