Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, bound in darkest brown cloth with gold lettering on the cover and spine. Bright decorative decoration on the front cover in gold and white. Binding as a whole is crisp and clean and tight, but held at a certain angle to the light, some evidence of a long ago splash of moisture is visible (affecting only the boards and not the pages, and even that only very minor). Interesting circular bookplate on inside front cover with the name "William Rule Westwood Chafy". The bookplate has ghosted a circular outline to the free endpaper opposite. Title page dated 1901. The name "Herbert Vivian" has been written in ink on the title page and in pencil on the half title, by previous owners eager to unmask the anonymous author. 181 pages. Pages clean. Binding tight. Vivian was an associate of Wilde and Churchill, a political and literary 'rising star' of the turn of the century are, whose star never fully rose, though he published several books. When this title was anonymously published in 1901, he has already published half a dozen books in his own name. Please email with questions or to request photos.
