A biography for older children - the story of a woman, born in slavery, brought to California during the days of the gold rush, where her father was able to purchase the freedom of himself and his family. After living in Placerville during the 1850's she and her husband became one of a group of about 600 African Americans who emigrated to Vancouver Island in British Columbia in 1858.
