It started with tomatoes harvested from polluted Chicago dirt. It ended with a new life on a broken-down Indiana farm, where former BBC producer Sallyann J. Murphey and her family traded the urban fast track for a simpler life. This is the story of the Murpheys' first year on the farm--a tender-hearted, hilarious, sometimes mystical American adventure.

SIGNED hardcover first edition - First printing. While many of us dream of quitting city life in favor of a "carefree" country life, this is an account of the first two years in the life of one family who acted on their dreams - Sallyann, a print and broadcast journalist, her photographer husband, Greg, and their five-year-old daughter, Charley, leave their Chicago home for a rundown 22-acre farm in Brown County, Indiana. INSCRIBED by the author on the title page. Illustrated with drawings by Glenn Wolff. Includes appendices with recipes and garden plans. Very near fine in a like dustjacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. The Metcalfe Family Album: Six Generations of Traditions and Memories by Sallyann J. Murphey was published by Chronicle Books, San Francisco, in 1999. Not an ex-library copy, this 256-page, 9" X 11", Signed First U.S. Edition is in NF condition. This book is like new--I can see no flaws, however minor. From Introduction, written by Jan Anderson Metcalfe, one of the six women around whom this multi-generational family saga revolves, ". One of the joys of my early married life was getting to know each of the Metcalfe women through their own writings. At first, I was struck by the simplicity of their lives--how much easier things seemed in the days before electricity, cars, phones, computers, or TV. But then I realized that was all unimportant. These women's dreams and disappointments weren't that different from my own. The lessons they learned throughout their lives are as relevant now as the day they wrote them down, and their strength, their courage, their straightforward common sense, are still worthy examples for us all. This was when I began to think that the Album should be published. It had grown beyond a personal keepsake into a true record for our times, one that could help all of us understand why we are who we are today." It was the author of the above-quoted portion of her Introduction who had all of the papers and photographs and diary entries and scraps of miscellany dropped into her lap as the next "keeper" of the Metcalfe Family Archives, this done by her mother-in-law(Jessie Metcalfe). And, it was Sallyann Murphey who Jan Metcalfe approached to put it all together into publishable form. This engrossing volume is the final product of their combined efforts. The book is saturated with dozens of photographs, and a goodly number of beautifully drawn, color illustrations, many of them done in collage-type arrangements, by one Laura Tarrish. I could go on, but I'm thinking you get the idea. This is a most special offering about what I think you will agree is a rather special family, once you've read their story. By the way, the book is SIGNED, beneath a very brief Inscription, in the center of the front loose end page. The Metcalfe Family Tree serves as this volume's Frontispiece. Thank you!!.
