Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is "Monkey Wrenches and Household Saints : Recent Sculpture by John Newman" . It is an exhibition catalog with color photographs of Newman's work. The catalog celebrates the exhibition held from September 5 to October 7, 2005 at the Clifford Gallery, Little Hall , at Colgate University. *********************************************** John Newman's sculptures demand a commitment to the pleasure and exigency of discovery : of unconscious desires, aesthetic bliss, physical incongruity. Like the Surrealists' objets interprétés, poetic transformations result from the displacement and juxtaposition of unrelated objects, and meaning is attributed by the negation of any real or imagined function. Marble and foam core, bronze and bamboo, lead and crystal and broken glass are ; melded and moulded into forms that remain intimate in scale while at the same time are suggestive of an expansive imagination. Inspiration comes from many sources and in numerous forms : Indian baskets, Japanese puppets and samurai helmets, African sceptres, all of which inform a process that might be called 'structural improvisation': a controlled , almost mathematical precision coupled with unconscious, automatic improvisation. Letting the imagination roam freely, Newman methodically works his materials while at the same time allowing them to dictate variations in compositional structure, much like free jazz, with its limitless, often impenetrable and dissonant fluctuations." *********************************************** GENRE : Exhibition Catalog / GALLERY : Clifford Gallery, Little Hall / DATE : September 5 - October 7, 2005 / TITLE : Monkey Wrenches and Household Saints Recent Sculptures by John Newman / TEXT : Laurie Simmons, Elizabeth Janus, (Andre Breton - 1924) / IMPRINT : Colgate University / PLACE : Hamilton, NY / EDITION : First Edition / STATUS : OP / PHYSICAL DETAILS -15 full color photographs of sculptures (including pictures on rear cover and title page) ; text integrated with pictures. Fine in Fine dust jacket (light surface wear, else Fine). From the publisher: "The intelligent irony that resonates through the best-known body of work of the American artist Tony Oursler, namely, his video and projection installations, results from the subtle combination of sound, language, and pop culture images that suffuse it. These elements are thoroughly explored in this monograph, the most extensive publication ever about Oursler and his work. His videos often employ the strangely projected human face to created bizarre contemporary icons and fragmented narratives that, while containing a humorous element, also speak to the dislocation caused by contemporary issues of sex, violence, and power. Tony Oursler includes 180 illustrations from his video, sculpture, and mixed-media works on paper, as well as an extensive selection of the artist's own writings. There are also two long conversations between Oursler and the artists Mike Kelley and Dan Graham, which testify to the long-lasting mutual appreciation and collaboration between them. This is a major new publication on the career of one of the most important American artists of the last two decades.".
