Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Arshile Gorky (illustrator). 1st. Near fine condition From the book: It gives us great pleasure to present this group of drawings by Arshile Gorky. This is the first important exhibition of Gorky's work in America in some time. We are particularly pleased, therefore, to show this cross-section of extraordinary works on paper from the Twenties, Thirties and Forties. This is an opportune time to re-examine and explore Gorky's tremendous contribution to the roots of Abstract Expressionism in America, h-1e was one of the first artists to truly liberate formal elements of painting. Gorky's influence on the development of de Kooning and Pollock was profound, and throughout the evolution of their work, each had an immeasurabte effect not only on the course of American art, but on that of the entire Twentieth century. This is the first time this group of drawings has been publicly exhibited. For this opportunity and for their expert help and generosity, we would like to extend special thanks to Agnes Fielding as well as to Natasha Gorky and Naro and Matthew Spender The essay included in this catalogue, written by Melvin R Laden offers significant insights into the work. Finally, we would like to thank Eugene V. Thaw for his ongoing interest in this project.
