Book First Edition
(Hardcover, 1985). 1985 1st edition. Square 8vo (211 x 204mm). Pp96. B/w photographs and illustrations. Green boards, spine titled in gilt. Minor faults (inscription / bookplate). Good-plus in used / faded dust-wrapper. Angling odds and ends; a treasury of fishing in pictures from the time of Isaak Walton to present day, taken from Timothy Benn's collection of angling art, post-cards and ephemera. "It is in no sense a formal history but rather, a series of glimpses into the past, using painting, cartoons, cards, catalogues and vignettes culled from a prodigious variety of sources. There are notes on the great anglers of bygone ages, the most celebrated books, the famous tacklemakers and their products, and much more besides." .

First Edition
(Hardcover, 2007). (2005) 2007 1st edition thus. 8vo (140 x 220mm). Pp100. Edition limited to 80 copies, each with a numbered bookplate. Plain blue buckram gilt, silk marker. Fine unread copy. This small book was truly a co-operative effort. Begun by Donald Overfield and Timothy Benn, the publisher, it was shelved on Overfield's death, then later completed by Benn and Tony Hayter. The book contains three pieces: i. An extended essay by Tony Hayter entitled G.E.M. Skues and the Nymph; ii. An excerpt from The Flyfishers' Journal describing a Flyfisher's Club debate of 1938 on nymph fishing in chalkstreams; iii. Skues' Nymphs and other Fly Dressings, excerpted from Overfield's The Way of a Man with aTrout. Timothy Benn provides introductory remarks and Kenneth Robson the preface. The book was edited by Jonathan Newdick, while Terry Griffiths contributed an appreciation of Jim Nice - who tied the flies for the book's de luxe edition - to the Flies volume. This appreciation, however, is not reproduced here. In his introductory remarks, Benn refers to "the author and I.", but is not explicit who he means. It seems probable that Hayter is intended, and that the Debate and Nymphs sections were meant as appendices to Hayter's 28-page essay. The legal declaration on the title-page verso gives Hayter, Robson and Griffiths jointly as authors, despite Griffiths' work not appearing and Robson's being merely a brief preface. This edition is taken from an 80-copy overprint of bookblocks for the original leather limited edition, numbered independently and bound simply in plain blue buckram. .
Haslemere: Creel Press. 2020. 8vo. Original green morocco-backed cloth boards, gilt border to sides, spine with gilt raised bands and lettering, in matching slipcase; pp. 111, illustrated in colour throughout, with Mottram fly tied by John Smith mounted in recess to front pastedown; new. No. 27 of limited edition of 30, this one of 15 copies of Collector's edition, with facsimile signature of the author and signature of his wife Christina to title page. This fascinating survey of the work of the visionary fly-tier J.C. Mottram was the last work, published posthumously, of Tim Benn, publisher, angler, founder of the Creel Press and longtime friend of Sotheran's. It is a typically lavish and stylish production, while the text has the authority and enthusiasm that distinguished its writer. He argues that Mottram (1879-1945) was a man so far ahead of his time that he was not sufficiently understood by his peers, and that his flies, which at the time seemed wild and eccentric, prophesied the development of fly fishing. The book contains detailed illustrations and descriptions of each of his flies.
