The major events ( Trafalgar, Waterloo, First Railways, Crimean War, Atlantic Cable etc, each have a large Colour Illustration with Very Large Font Text on the page opposite. Brown Cloth Spine with Pictorial Boards, illustrated with a small Boy & Girl on a Stage, on front and a scene of the Cable on the back. 22 Pages of Colour illustrations in total. Some edge wear and a little chipping & rubbing to cover. Front hinge cracked and title page & first illustration loose but present. Pictures and Text Pages in nice, clean condition. Book weighs 600g. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
FIRST EDITION 1901, oblong 4to, 205 x 250 mm, 8 x 10 inches, cloth backed colour illustrated white boards, 103 pages + (1), plates and text printed 1 side only. 24 wonderful colour plates, each facing descriptive quatrains all connected in rather strange ways to familiar nursery stories and rhymes. All about the enchanting dreams of a darling 2 year old boy. Recased with matching blue cloth spine and corners, new yellow endpapers, white boards darkened to grey, some inner joints neatly repaired with paper strips, a crease to inner margin of 1 text page strengthened with linen binder's tape, this text page reinserted the wrong way round, 2 pages slightly worn at 1 edge with tiny nicks. Contents otherwise nice, no inscriptions. A good plus tight copy. As soon as Master Johnnie's Nanny puts him to bed Little Boy Blue arrives and takes him off in Cinderella's coach 'To the beautiful land.//Where pots of jam/Grow on the ground;/Plum-pudding birds/Fly all around.//And buns and cakes,/And dolls and sheep,/Lie side by side/In a lovely heap'. He meets Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Dame Trot and her pig, Baa Baa Black sheep etc. He rides on the Banbury Cross Horse and dines with the King on Blackbird Pie. He has great fun. Beautifully illustrated book of the adventures of twins, 95 pages in bright clean condition just the occasional light mark, every other page is a full page colour illustration with text in verse opposite. Only date in it is 1900 possibly first edition but cannot be sure. Book is complete but has been repaired at the hinges and the outer spine with some kind of glue, it is not too bad a job but is apparent as not being professionaly done, endpapers are browned. Tight sound copy in Good condition due to heavy edge and corner rubs to boards, Darkening and age soiling to off white boards, small waterstain to red spine leaving the spot pink, evidence of glue repair very well done. Small owner's inscription dated Xmas of oh two on front free endpaper along with a tiny price in blue ink on same. browning to endpapers and slight browning to edges of interior pages which in no way detracts from the charming color line drawings or equally charming verse. This is a rare delight from a bygone era.
