Cirilo Villaverde era el sexto hijo de un doctor en medicina de un central azucarero en la provincia más occidental de Cuba. Estudió latín en el colegio del padre Morales en 1823, también estudió filosofía en el seminario de San Carlos y dibujo en la famosa escuela San Alejandro, ésta última todavía existe. En 1834, recibió el titulo de Bachiller en Leyes. Trabajó en algunos bufetes, pero pronto abandonó estos trabajos, los cuales catalogó de corruptos y se dedicó a la educación y la literatura .Fue maestro en dos colegios de La Habana y en otro situado en la provincia de Matanzas. Fue autor de las novelas “El ave muerta”,”El perjurio” y “La cueva de Tanganana”.Publicó también cuentos como “El ciego y su perro” y “Generosidad fraternal”. En 1846, año en que escribió el cuento “Generosidad fraternal”, se convirtió en sospechoso del gobierno de España por sus pensamientos nacionalistas

About the Author:
Cirilo Villaverde (1812 - 1894) fue un destacado escritor cubano, autor de Cecilia Valdés o La loma del ángel. Vivió sus primeros años de vida en el ingenio, en el que estaba vigente el sistema esclavista. En 1820 se trasladó con su familia a La Habana. Aunque se graduó como bachiller en leyes, y trabajó brevemente en algunos bufetes, pronto abandonó esta actividad para trabajar como maestro en varios colegios de La Habana y dedicarse a la literatura.
