For fifteen years Sussex-born David Milsted lived in the Scottish islands of Orkney (Highland Park and Scapa), Islay (Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhainn and Caol Ila) and Skye (Talisker) - which is as near to heaven as any whisky fancier could get. He claims that he would choose to work in a distillery if he ever had to get a proper job - which, fortunately, he hasn't.

A professional author, his greatest pleasure besides writing is to run whisky tastings*. He moved back to England on a mission to civilise his fellow-countrymen, and now does so from Dorset.

An old Gaelic proverb has it that "There are two things best taken naked, and one of them is whisky", and to maintain your status as an expert you will say that only two mixers are allowed: water, preferably from a Highland tap or a bottle, or more whisky.
