Robert Boyle (1627-91) was an influential scientist and philosopher of the 17th century. The founder of modern chemistry, he headed the movement that turned it from an occult science into a subject grounded in experiment, methodology, and observation. He is best known for founding the Boyle Lectures and for Boyle's Law that states that the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional.
