Review:
Peter Dobereiner--who died in 1996 aged 70--was the golf correspondent of the Observer and the Guardian for many years. In addition, he was consultant to Golf World and contributing editor of Golf Digest, and wrote a good number of books on golf.

Dobereiner was a much-loved personality throughout the golf world and was widely recognised as one of the greatest golf writers. But his talent as a golf writer extended beyond sport--he was one of the original scriptwriters for BBC TV's late-night satirical show That Was The Week, That Was.

This book is a selection of works from the millions of words he wrote on the game of golf. It includes essays on some of the world's greatest golfers--Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino, Ben Hogan, etc--and shows great insight into their characters. Dobereiner had a great passion for golf, and though he was no great exponent of the game he had extensive knowledge of its lore and history, and was always "peeved" by the absurdity of the phrasing of the rules of golf.

The essays written by Dobereiner--and his reflections on golf and golfers--contain his own inimitable sense of humour and no doubt ring as true now as on the day they were first printed. But his talent extended beyond his golf writings--his ready wit and sharp eye for human failings are admirably demonstrated in the after-dinner speeches and the scripts for That Was The World That Was which are reproduced in this book.

Those who looked forward to Dobereiner's articles will derive much pleasure from refreshing their memories, and those who have never read Dobereiner's renderings will realise what a loss he is to journalism. This is a book that can be enjoyed by everyone, irrespective of whether or not you have any interest in the game of golf. --Ben Naylor
