Each of my stories as told here is, with very rare exception, based on actual events and situations experienced by me or told to me by my father. Each story is short by design. Each is void of fluff. It is my desire to impress you with concepts and ideas, unencumbered by verbosity. If, according to Shakespeare, ..". brevity is the soul of wit," it is my intention to capture the essence of the actual wit we experience in our everyday lives. Within each story there can be found a lesson, a smile, a tear, or a moral. In some stories - all four. On the other hand, each can be read for light entertainment, leaving the depths to be pondered by others. Each of these little stories will serve a dual purpose. Primarily, I hope they will bring you a smile or a tear as you join me in what may at first seem to be only "light reading." Relax and fly with me as we relive these actual events of bygone days. Secondly, while the many imbedded historical references can simple be ignored or skimmed over, there are much deeper meanings throughout the book. If the stories are read carefully TO youngsters or are read aloud TO YOU by youngsters, then parents and teachers will find a wealth of historically accurate references from which one could launch a discussion... or around which one can build a lesson. Education is all about "experiences." Living through them, sharing them, learning about them... understanding how things fit together. If a child never saw a "milk bottle," because they have only experienced milk coming in a cardboard box, if an inner city child's only experienced is that strawberries come from the local grocery store, or if they think all babies are born in hospitals, ...then there is a lot to learn in these stories. At last publication, I had eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter. I hope these stories in some way make up for the together-time we lost by living so many miles apart. I hope sincerely you get a chance to read them aloud and slowly to a favorite

About the Author:
Thom Shipley comes to professional writing after several careers in which his technical and informative writing skills were critically honed. His education and occupations range from Beef Production to Symphonic Conducting; from owner/operator of a successful Child Development Center to concurrently owning and operating an Assisted Living Facility for the elderly and mentally infirmed. Thom’s first career in Education ranged from being an Elementary School Instrumental Music Instructor, to Director of IT, through the ranks to Acting as Assistant Superintend of Schools for one of the nation’s top State Departments of Education. After retiring from his second career as Executive Director of a billion-dollar federal education association program on Capitol Hill, Thom built custom homes and log cabins, served as the Chair of a County Planning and Zoning Commission, directed ecumenical church choir cantatas, was guest conductor for high school and college musicals and concert performances, and was a 4-H counselor. More recently, as a “rusty musician,” he played and sang with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Thom and his partner have completely restored and beautifully decorated a stone-front Victorian row home in Baltimore's Cultural District. He is working on another short story compilation that reflects his life experiences, a book to be called The Narrowing of the Colored and White Chasm: 1940- 1970, and an academic text on The Revitalization of the American Classroom.
