Fiction as a way to connect with the truth
I wrote Welcome to the Ark because in my work as a consultant to parents of extremely intelligent children I have come to believe that we know far too little about the possibilities of the human mind. I have met and worked with children whose clearly demonstrable abilities seem impossible. What we could learn about children as far from the norms as the "Ark children" could teach us a great deal about the rest of us if we were willing to look.
Synopsis:
I wrote Welcome to the Ark because in my work as a consultant to parents of extremely intelligent children I have come to believe that we know far too little about the possibilities of the human mind. I have met and worked with children whose clearly demonstrable abilities seem impossible. What we could learn about children as far from the norms as the "Ark children" could teach us a great deal about the rest of us if we were willing to look.
In addition, I felt a powerful need to create fictional characters whose lives and feelings reflect those of real children who are often discounted, neglected, or disallowed because of differences we have not yet come to understand or to accept.
Four brilliant yet troubled young people are brought together in an experimental program they dub the Ark. They embark on a mission to stem the violence engulfing the world, but others will stop at nothing to scuttle the Ark.'
