This book brings the 'public sociology' movement into the classroom, as it teaches students to use the tools of sociology to become effective participants in our democratic society. Through exercises and projects, the authors encourage students to practice the application of these tools in order to get both hands-on training in sociology and experience with civic engagement in their communities.

(Student Reviews Kathleen Korgen's Students 2007-06-26)

"I... really enjoyed reading the book. It gave lots of great examples, it was easy and fun to read, and I truly feel like I learned something by reading it. I also love the fact that it wasn't 3000 pages long and that it didn't cost 100 bucks! :)"

":However, The Engaged Sociologist is a text that is clear and really gets to the point. It gives you a ton of information in a concise way. The questions and activities throughout each chapter enable students to think beyond the information written. It really presents the subject matter in an understandable and effective way."
