The island of Lundy is twelve-year-old Jenny's world, with its close-knit community of islanders and lighthouse-keepers. But soon she must go to boarding school on the mainland, leaving behind everything she loves - including Midnight, the wild stallion she has secretly befriended.... This is a story for children of about ten years old and over (although younger children have enjoyed it, too, and several people in their eighties have said they loved reading it!) It is set on Lundy, an island in the Bristol Channel, in the 1960s - when the island was privately owned, keepers lived in the North and South Lights and a stallion called Midnight roamed free. The book was inspired by tales about the legendary Midnight and the island at that time, but the story is fictional.

Although the book is set in the 1960s, this doesn't jar particularly; yes, there are no mobile phones or ipods but Jenny and her friends are recognisable enough types and the story strong enough to carry it through. The descriptions of Lundy are wonderful....The book catches the flavour of the community well, but is at its best when Jenny goes to school. Victoria Eveleigh has a real talent for portraying the minefield that is girlhood friendship, and Jenny's struggles to fit in are captured wonderfully. Maybe a school story should be the next thing on Victoria Eveleigh's agenda; she writes well and convincingly about ponies, but the school section is so acutely observed I feel there is real scope here for more.... The pony Midnight also emerges well; he is entirely believable, unlike some of the poor cardboard creatures who infest some modern series.... This is a well crafted, absorbing pony story. Victoria and Chris Eveleigh live on an Exmoor hill farm near Lynmouth, on the North Devon coast. They spent their honeymoon on Lundy, and have returned to the island many times since. Horses have always played an important part in their lives, from untamed Exmoor ponies to working Shire horses. When their children were growing up, they had a part-bred Lundy mare called Streamways Kittiwake. A quest to learn more about Lundy ponies led to new friendships and many fascinating tales about Lundy half a century ago. The result was this story.
