Colchester, which claims to be Britain's oldest recorded town, has the oldest garrison in Great Britain. For nearly nine centuries Colchester has been administered from the same plot of land in the centre of the High Street, a street originally laid out by the Romans, some two thousand years ago. The first building, of which there is definite knowledge, is the Moot Hall, which, it is thought, was built in the 12th century. Although it was extensively altered it continued to serve the town until 1843, the following year a new town hall was built on the same spot.
