The sights and sounds of the countryman's year as it follows its age-old pattern from Wolf month (January) to Yule (December) are sensitively woven into a colourful tapestry of seasonal happenings by Alan Jenkins. This personal pastiche ranges from natural history - with all its myriad forms of flora and fauna from the wild daffodil to the stricken elm and from the tiny shrew to the majestic red deer stag - to farming - with its annual round of ploughing, lambing, sheepshearing and harvesting. The sports which play a part in the countryman's year are not forgotten; hunting, shooting, fishing and falconry, all have their place here. The characteristic events of the country year are described month by month. Peter Barrett's dramatic paintings, which introduce each month, bring out the essence of the British countryside in all its varying moods.
