The Californian urban environment, and the spectrum of responses it inspires in contemporary California artists, is the subject of this book. Working in a variety of modern media - such as painting, photography, three-dimensional work, and video - cityscape artists of present-day California see the city as a manifestation of many visions, from the transcendental to the apocalyptic. This text explores the visions of this group of artists, and their various interpretations of the mythic role of the city in California art. This book includes many different artistic renderings of the city: paintings of skyscrapers gleaming in the California sun, a construction site in San Francisco, Oakland ravaged by the 1989 earthquake, drawings reflecting the rapid changes of downtown San Diego, photographs of houses in Los Angeles, and three-dimensional contructions of the car culture in East Los Angeles.
