Book Description Paperback. Condition: New. Translated from the French by Michael Hamburger. Baudelaire's prose poems, or Little Poems in Prose, were written at long intervals during the last twelve or thirteen years of his life. Most of them were published separately in periodicals, but the complete set of 50 prose poems was not published until 1869, two years after the poet's death. This form was of great utility to Baudelaire, in that it is a form which makes its point without too much argument or elaboration while rendering a poetic state of mind in images. Briefly and vividly it allowed a moralist like Baudelaire a medium that was epigrammatic or aphoristic, while allowing scope for fantasy and for that element of suggestiveness, which he considered essential to beauty. With a Selected Bibliography. 81p. Seller Inventory # 3116692
