Review:
Even if your house and its contents are perfect, this is the sort of book that will tempt you to buy an old chair or find an odd window or wall that you can "do up" using some of the inspirational techniques in this book. Attractively produced, it is ideal for the novice or the expert, with ideas and treatments, both simple and complicated, explained equally clearly. The book is full of lively illustrations comparing and contrasting different techniques and there are useful notes and recommendations thrown in for good measure.

The Complete Book of Paint is divided into four sections. The first covers preparation of surfaces, different materials, the sort of equipment needed and various recipes and techniques. Once you have grasped this (or if you are an expert anyway), move on to a fascinating section on simple finishes--from sponging, dragging and stippling to verdigris, bronzing and gilding. The third section introduces further decorative designs using paint and pattern and finally there is a range of ideas for decorating pretty well anything in the house.

The Complete Book of Paint is written by three people who, between them, have considerable knowledge and experience of painting techniques. Robinson and Lowther work on hand-painted furniture, friezes and painting and Wagstaff, author and British television presenter, has a background in restoration, theatrical and graphic design. --Judith Spelman
