The author calls on his experience in a nazi concentration camp to tell the story of two boys , Danny and Manny who escape from such a camp at the end of the Second World War Both Ill and starving they escape from a train carrying prisoners which is being shot at by an American aeroplane. There follows an arduous struggle to make their way through a German forest haunted by the memories of losing their families in the camp.
