From the Author:
Surrendering means victory, not defeat.
The quest to spend enough time with our children and enough time pursuing our own dreams is the central angst of our generation of post-feminism women. It is never easy. Yet there is no substitution for the grounding joy that comes from being with our children, precious time that comes but once. We can always go back to pursuing worldly careers; we can never go back to this eyeblink of life when our kids are young and cling to us like monkeys. When I started writing this book, our four sons were all in diapers. Now they are ages nine, seven and five year old twins, and I am wrenchingly aware of how quickly time flies by. This is ultimately what my book is about; it's about being present as much as possible in the fleeting present of our young childrens' lives.Surrendering to motherhood does not mean defeat; it means yielding to the higher power of childrearing, and that is a supreme victory.
Synopsis:
A Powerful Story About Letting Go Of The Burning Need To Achieve; Surrendering To Motherhood is the story of one woman's search for spiritual fulfilment and personal identity that takes the reader along on her climb higher and higher on the career ladder, which only leaves her feeling emptier and emptier. As her provocative and passionate memoir unfolds, Iris Krasnow is a woman who seems to have it all, including a glamorous job as a feature writer for UPI, which takes her on assignments around the world. Yet no matter what she achieves in her journalistic ascent, a relentless nagging gnaws away at her heart, leaving a spiritual void. Ultimately - and ironically - it took the chaotic joy of motherhood for Krasnow to find peace. By age thirty-nine, she and her husband were the parents of four young sons. Her children had captured her, forcing her to live for the moment rather than some grand future, and she was surrendering. Surrendering To Motherhood is about ridding yourself of ambition as a barrier to happiness, and finding your true self in the love and calamity of motherhood.

A powerful and intimate story, this book sends a message to the author's own baby-boom generation programmed to 'have it all'. Iris Krasnow advises her readers to stop and savour the moment, rather than constantly trying to reach somewhere higher and better.
