This exciting and comprehensive guide captures the enthralling world of reptiles and insects from all over the globe. From poisonous snakes and fearsome alligators to delicate butterflies and industrious honey bees, you'll discover amazing facts about all sizes and species of reptiles, bugs and minibeasts. This book examines in detail all aspects of these animals, from behaviour, life cycles and how the bodies work to habitat, ancestors and conservation. Did you know, for example, that butterflies have a life expectancy of only a few days, or that some species of ant can lift up to 50 times their own weight? Or that the komodo dragon is the only species of lizard that is believed to include humans in its diet? Close-up photography takes a detailed look at the secrets of reptiles and insects, from different types of scales, heat detectors and fearsome teeth to all-seeing compound eyes, super-sensitive antennae and powerful stings. Stunning picture sequences zoom in closer still, revealing for example, how baby crocodiles hatch out, how lizards grow new tails, the metamorphosis of a butterfly, and how a spider spins its web. Expert cross-section diagrams reveals the inner workings of the animals' anatomy and habitats, while flow diagrams reveal the link between today's creatures and their ancestors. Legend boxes relate the stories associated with each species, placing the biological facts in a fun and accessible format that brings the information to life. This exciting new book makes learning about natural history exciting and accessible. It clearly sets out the link between animals and their environment, bringing the subject to life with stunning photography, informative diagrams and lively, fact-packed text. A fascinating guide to the hidden world of snakes, crocodiles, alligators, lizards, turtles, spiders, beetles, bugs, butterflies, moths, bees and ants More than 1500 fabulous wildlife photographs and illustrations provide a stunning close-up view of survival in the wild Exciting and accessible information provides an insight into every aspect of reptile and insect life and behaviour Features 'Did You Know' spotlights that reveal amazing-but-true facts about reptiles and insects: for example, some crocodiles can live up to 100 years; the green turtle is named after the colour of its body fat; and female aphids can give birth to up to 50 young in a week An ideal reference book for 8-12-year-olds for both school and home study and projects, and a superb family encyclopedia Special features include how the body works, food and hunting, habitats, finding a mate, colour and camouflage, and conservation
