A Thousand Suns - Hardcover

I actually woke up one morning muttering that tagline, and from there, the book came to me so incredibly easily. Frankly it was a gift.

I've always had a compulsive fascination with the losing side of any war, curious at what it is that makes the losers fight on, even when the effort is clearly futile. I mean, did you know, there were pockets of SS soldiers still holding out, still fighting in the rubble of Berlin, nine days after Hitler's death? Unbelievable.

During the research for this book, I was also stunned at how intact the German war machine was, tucked away in caves outside Berlin, still producing tanks, fighter planes by the hundreds. The only thing they lacked were the men to fly and drive these machines, and the fuel to power them – and yet they continued to churn them out right until the very last day of the war.
And there was something else, something that's always been an interesting detail of the war to me, maybe it was an urban myth, maybe it was true – but it ended up as the other key ingredient of this book. It's in there – you'll know what I mean when you come across it.

One thing is for certain, I will never write another book quite like this one; it's not a formula one can repeat over and over ad nauseum.

Maybe I'll get lucky and wake up again in the early hours of the morning muttering another awe-inspiring notion...who knows?
