This volume presents an insight into Gertrude Stein's life, and provides a portrait of her gifted brother, Leo. It is the story of the relationship between a brother and a sister, shedding light on a beguiling and complex couple. The name Gertrude Stein conjures up the romanticized Paris of the 1920s. However, for almost two decades before that, Leo and Gertrude Stein had held court to writers and painters at 27, Rue de Fleurs in a salon filled with the bright, bold canvases they were purchasing. Brilliant, voluble and profoundly insecure, brother and sister spent most of their lives shoring up their images, each helping to create the other. A complementary and devoted couple, eccentric and compelling, they were constantly together from childhood to adulthood. And then their mutual dependence proved too painful. Leo denounced his sister's work, denounced the painters he had once supported and, in 1914, denounced Paris for a life of uninterrupted solitude.

Review:
Central to avant-garde Paris in the early years of this century, Gertrude Stein grew into a cult figure, a proponent of modernist experimentation and a writer who inspired such authors as Ernest Hemingway and Sherwood Anderson. Less well known is her brother, Leo Stein, who amassed an incredible collection of early modern art and helped paved the way for his sister's modernist exploration. In this biography, Brenda Wineapple traces the story of the Steins' eventful life and their own relationship, which ended with a complete break.
Review:
0;Brenda Wineapple could have called this book 6;Scenes from a Marriage7;. . . . An absorbing picture.1;2;"Chicago Tribune"

0;Ms. Wineapple does an impressive job of setting down the facts of the Steins'' eventful lives. . . . [An] ambitious biography.1;2;"New York Times Book Review"

0;A riveting joint profile of Gertrude and Leo Stein. . . . A wild, Fauve-like canvas of a time before emotional color was muted by Prozac.1;2;M. G. Lord, "Elle"

0;A luminous, harrowing achievement for which all students of literature and art, as well as of families, are in Brenda Wineapple''s debt.1;2;Richard Howard -- Richard Howard

0;Wineapple illuminates the distinct and tremendously influential personalities of Gertrude and Leo Stein as well as the intricate nature of their intense but doomed relationship.1;2;"Booklist"

0;Brenda Wineapple7;s meticulous, scholarly, and affectionate double biography of Gertrude Stein and her brother Leo gives us the fascinating story of two glorious animals.1;2;Patricia Bosworth -- Patricia Bosworth

0;Wineapple tells a dramatically compelling story; her analysis is insightful, her meticulous documentation unobtrusive. She has written an absorbing account of two extraordinary siblings.1;2;"Washington Post Book World"

0;Brenda Wineapple brilliantly disentwines the record of Stein''s life from the image of it that Stein and her allies created. . . . Wineapple''s narrative is fluent and clear . . . fascinating.1;2;"San Francisco Chronicle"

0;Wineapple7;s book explores their partnership with humour and panache. Not the least of its virtues is that, while paying ample homage to Gertrude, it does justice perhaps for the first time at length and in detail, to Leo. . . . Scrupulous, sensitive, marvellous.1;2;"Daily Telegraph"

0;Sister Brother is a beautifully even-handed and penetrating treatment. This biography is indispensable for students of Gertrude Stein and of modernism, and will be a delight to lovers of art and to all those interested in what Wineapple calls 6;the romance of families.7;1;2;"Toronto Globe and Mail"
