A study of Irish booksellers, who without permission and without paying royalties, dramatically increased the circulation of British writers by selling cheap reprints in Ireland, Britain, and America. Pays considerable attention to the more than 100 Irish booksellers, including Matthew Carey and 15 others recorded in the DAB, who transferred to the American booktrade between 1750 and 1820. Appendices list Irish reprints of works by Fielding, Smollett, Stern, Johnson, Boswell, Goldsmith and Gibbon. From the preface: "The thesis of the present study is that Irish booksellers through cheap reprints disseminated the works of the major British writers of their time and augmented the audience for these writers not only in Ireland but in Britain and the United States of America. The circulation in America of Irish reprints of these writers was enhanced by the transfer of at least 101 members of the book trade from Ireland to the American book trade between 1750 and 1820. Many of these Irish booksellers in America both imported cheap Irish reprints of the British writers from their former colleagues and issued their own cheap reprints" Bound in the original gray laminated boards, stamped in shiny maroon.
