This anthology, which was originally designed to accompany the Open University course Greece 478-336BC (A292). covers the main primary sources for the political, economic, social, artistic, religious and cultural life of Athens during the great period from 478 to 336. Pericles's Funeral Speech sets the scene. There are substantial extracts from Aristotle, Xenophon and the Old Oligarch. Inscriptions are extensively used, and some important inscriptions are made available in English for the first time. Much of the rest of the material is difficult to access except to specialists. There are numerous passages from the fragments of comic drama, for example, and a fascinating section on some of the main festivals of Athens. The evidence about the attitude to women and the position of slaves is presented in all its complexity. The majority of the passages have been freshly translated for this collection. Each major section has a short introduction and each extract is presented with a note which includes bibliographical details of useful secondary material. The whole will be essential to anyone at school or college studying this period, as well as a book of great interest for the general reader to browse in.
