Synopsis:
Written during the last two decades of her life, this memoir reconstructs the lives of Rebecca West's ancestors and exposes the roots of her convictions. The book tells the story of three families, West's own maternal and paternal lines and that of her husband's family, which fuse into a rich, broad landscape of Scottish, Anglo-Irish, Lithuanian and English ancestry. In her parents' stories, Rebecca West found the themes of male betrayal and female strength which characterized her most important work.
