Review:
In the world of science fiction/fantasy books, it is fantasy that reigns supreme. While much intelligent, science-based SF is still being written (by such authors as Paul McAuley), hordes of elves, magicians and goblins have long exceeded the more plausible material in terms of sales. There is, thankfully, one exception: Stephen Baxter. He is one of the few intelligent writers still producing massive, fastidiously textured SF epics that flatter rather than insult the intelligence of the reader. As with the very best SF creators, his ideas come thick and fast, and an exhilarating sense of wonder is guaranteed for the reader in any one of his many novels. But what might be called science-based fantasy is also a speciality.

. Navigator is the third book in Baxter's much-acclaimed Time’s Tapestry sequence, and once again the display of imagination and inventiveness takes the breath away. William the Conqueror's forces are fighting against insuperable odds, when a prophecy is given by a woman in a ruined village describing massive engines of destruction. The clash between civilisations of the East and West in the Mediterranean is reaching apocalyptic levels, and the prophecy of the war engines that will decide the conflict becomes ever more relevant -- which of two religions will win the battle? In the meantime, engineers struggle to bring the fabled machinery into reality.

This is the kind of alternative history that is Baxter’s métier, and the sheer gusto of his storytelling carries this diffuse narrative along with tremendous panache. --Barry Forshaw

Review:
A book that shows off Baxter's considerable skills as a novelist. This is proof that Baxter's at the height of his powers. (Jonathan Wright SFX)

Book Description Hardback: 9½" x 6¼". Condition: Fine: Very small signs of wear. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Cover Art: Corbis (illustrator). 1st Edition. © 2007: 3rd in the 'Time's Tapestry' series of books. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: As William the Conqueror's men attempt to stamp out the flames of rebellion to bring an end to the Murdrum, the furtive slaughter, of the guerilla campaign against the occupying forces a prophecy is spoken by a bedraggled woman in a shattered village. A prophecy that speaks of terrifying engines of war, engines of God's vengeance that will be unleashed in a war between civilizations. As the flame of the Crusades burns back and forth across Outremer, as the Mediterranean becomes a crucible for a seemingly endlessly war between Islam and Christianity, as even in Spain where Moor and Christian had lived side by side the years bring savage sieges, people die and families are torn apart to keep the prophecy alive. Will the engines finally win the war for Christianity or Islam? Or will all be swept away by the rumoured might of the Mongols that have already swept through Asia? Or does the future lie not to the East, but to the West, across the great sea. And while the scholars debate the true nature of the prophecy, and Kings and Emirs, all the time the engineers are working to build the engines of God. Where have the plans for these terrifying weapons of war come from? What does the Weaver of Time's Tapestry intend?:- Review(s): "Strong imagination and a capacity for awe abound in the work of Stephen Baxter. A truly Wellsian vision" - The Times Literary Supplement:- (original cost £18.99). Seller Inventory # 20.051.00015
