Spending New Year's Eve together, they discuss plans to holiday in St Tropez during August. A villa is rented, and as they all look forward to the summer break, tragedy strikes only two weeks into the New Year, when Anne suffers a fatal heart attack. Distraught, Robert tries to pull out of the holiday, but his friends convince him that he should still go. In time, Robert meets Gwen, a younger woman - who happens to be a Hollywood actress, and asks her to join him at the villa, to his friends' dismay. What ensues during the holiday makes for a moving novel about loyalty, friendship and love.
