Blackbeard: America's Most Notorious Pirate - Softcover

Well, for one thing, just about every fictional pirate in film and literature has in some way been based on the historical figure of Blackbeard. He has become the personification of the fearsome pirate. My book is an attempt to unravel the mysteries of his life, and to show something of the man behind the legend.

The last full-length biography of "America’s most notorious pirate" was written over 30 years ago. Since then fresh information has come to light, old theories have been disproved, and spectacularly, the wreck of Blackbeard’s old flagship has been discovered. For the first time this book pulls all these fresh strands of evidence together.

My book is the result of a long-held interest in piracy during its "Golden Age". It struck me that the book could be so much more than just a pirate biography. Sure enough, by describing Blackbeard’s life, explaining how he operated and where he sailed, I was also telling the story of piracy in its heyday, when Blackbeard and his fellow cutthroats terrorised the waters of the Americas and virtually held the American Colonies to ransom. That was the real secret to his fame - more than any other pirate before or since, he threatened the very life-blood of a fledgling America. It is little wonder that his notoriety has continued through to the present day!
