I met Jimmy the Wags ten years ago while we were both bosses in the NYPD. He was a character then and became a legend as a PI. I wanted to write a different kind of "true crime" book. Most books about cops or PI's deal with how many people they've arrested, how many pounds of drugs they've seized or movie stars they've guarded. I decided to make this nonfiction book read like a novel with crisp dialogue, descriptive narrative and humor. I wanted to paint a novelist's picture of the characters that Jimmy came into contact with over the years. How would I know what was spoken during a particular Wags case? Because I was there. I'm also a licensed private investigator. This book was a true collaborative effort: A PI who had a story to tell and a PI who transcribed it into words. What I hope the reader gets from this book is the sense of the man. Jimmy Wagner is a true hero in that his family is his life and his degree of loyalty to that family and his friends is unmatched in anyone I've ever met. People always ask me what it's like to be a professional private investigator. Well, boys and girls it's like a cross between an episode of "Barney Miller" and the storming of Omaha Beach in "Saving Private Ryan." Some days are a little more exciting than others, but you have to go through the job with some humor. That's what "Jimmy the Wags" is all about. Enjoy.
