Beautiful, rebellious Bess Fitzmaurice is mesmerized by Dan McCaffrey, an American involved in the Fenian revolt against British tyranny when he appears in her family's house on May Eve 1865. Bess and her brother Michael get Dan to a ship and sail to America. But in America in 1865 Bess discovers among the Irish Fenians that money, power and patriotism are entangled in bewildering demoralizing ways. The Fenian invasion of Canada, and their goal to hold the English colony hostage for a Free Ireland, becomes a pawn in the power struggle between Washington and New York. When the American government double - crosses the Irish movement, forcing thousands of ex-Irish Civil War veterans to retreat back to the United States, acrimony engulfs the movement, resulting in Bess' brother Michael's murder. In despair, Bess quits the Fenians, finding love in the arms of former Union General Jonathan Stapleton. But their idyll is soon invaded by Dan McCaffrey, who forces her to choose between him and her new lover

Review:
"Thomas Fleming is one of my favorite writers because he combines powerful storytelling with the skills of a superb historian."--John Jakes"I don't read Thomas Fleming just to learn about American history. I read Thomas Fleming because I want to smell what the Americans in that time smelt, to see as our ancestor's saw, and most important to feel every emotion, every thought, and every moment that the people of our country felt."--W.E.B Griffin

Book Description Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Fair. A bit scuffed but all pages intact and legible. Good reading copy. Clean. Store Stamped. --- --- Beautiful, rebellious Bess Fitzmaurice is mesmerized by Dan McCaffrey, an American of Irish descent who has come to Ireland to aid the Fenian revolt against British tyranny. He appears in her home on May Eve 1865, fleeing British forces. To Bess, Dan is the mythical Donal Ogue, the hero of a famous Irish poem, returned to rescue Ireland---but right now, he is an American Civil War veteran on the run. Bess and her brother, Michael, get Dan to a ship, and they flee to America. --- In 1865, America is nation ravaged by four years of Civil War. Bess discovers that among the Irish-American Fenians money and power and patriotism are entangled in bewildering and demoralizing ways, while Dan McCaffrey surrenders to the corruption of New York City politics. The Fenians' invasion of Canada and their goal of holding the English colony hostage for a free Ireland become a pawn in a power struggle between Democrats and Republicans. When the American federal government double-crosses the Fenians, forcing thousands of Irish Civil War veterans to abandon the Canadian invasion after winning the first battle, acrimony engulfs the movement, leading to feuds, name-calling---and murder. --- In despair, Bess quits the Fenians and finds love in the arms of former Union General Jonathan Stapleton. Their idyll, however, is soon interrupted by Dan McCaffrey, who forces her to choose between him and her new lover. Seller Inventory # 2519
