For the Fourth Edition, the editor collated the 1847 text with the two modern texts (Norton's William J. Sale collation and the Clarendon), and found a great number of variants, including accidentals. This discovery led to changes in the body of the Norton Critical Edition text that are explained in the preface. New to "Backgrounds and Contexts" are additional letters, a compositional chronology, related prose, and reviews of the 1847 text. "Criticism" collects five important assessments of Wuthering Heights, three of them new to the Fourth Edition, including Lin Haire-Sargeant's essay on film adaptations of the novel.

Review:
"A dark and passionate tale of tortured but enduring love... Mesmerising" (Guardian)

"This brilliantly atmospheric Yorkshire saga has only one drawback - Emily never wrote another novel. For me, it is both fantastic but also true to life because the protagonists have such believably fierce emotions" (Kate Mosse)

"When I was 16 I read Wuthering Heights for the first time, and I read it as a kind of oracle; that life is worth nothing if it is not worth everything. Disaster does not matter, intensity does. You can dilute Wuthering Heights, as Mills & Boon and musicals have done. But if you are honest, you cannot escape its central stark premise; all or nothing. The all is not Heathcliff - that is the sentimental version. The all is what Heathcliff represents, which is life itself" (Jeanette Winterson)

"It is as if Emily Brontė could tear up all that we know human beings by, and fill these unrecognizable transparencies with such a gust of life that they transcend reality" (Virginia Woolf)

"Only Emily Brontė exposes her imagination to the dark spirit" (V. S. Pritchett)
Review:
"Wuthering Heights is one of the classics which has stood the test of time. I liked the mixture of large and small designs: there are plenty of designs which absorb hours and days, but plenty of smaller pieces which are happily completed in minutes rather than hours but which still give a sense of satisfaction. The paper used in the book is of high quality and colours don't bleed through from the reverse." (- The Book Bag)

"The book is stunning ... a joy to colour." (- Creative Colouring with Hazel)
