The Middle East has rarely been absent from the world's media since the end of World War 2. Next to East-West relations, its conflicts have provided the most intractable set of issues in international affairs. Inevitably, the United States became the major outside party. As the Arab-Israeli dispute came to dominate Middle East affairs, the Americans had to reconcile their wide-ranging strategic and economic interests with the domestic pressures to support Israel. This book analyses and illustrates the decisions reached in Washington and examines their impact on the region's quarrels.

Synopsis:
This book charts the progress of American diplomacy in the Middle East, from the end of World War II to the administration of Ronald Reagan. As the Arab-Israeli dispute came to dominate Middle East affairs, the Americans had to reconcile their wide-ranging strategic and economic interests with the domestic pressures to support Israel. The author analyzes and illustrates the decisions reached in Washington and examines their impact on the region's quarrels. T.Fraser is also author of " Partition in Ireland, India and Palestine: Theory and Practice" and is editor of "The Middle East, 1914-1979".
From the Back Cover:
Drawing on a wide variety of published and unpublished contemporary documents, T.G. Fraser analyzes the arguments for and against partition as they were presented by the main protagonists at the time. It looks at ways in which partition was seen as intellectual or as an ad hoc solution to rival national claims, how it was related to ethnic conflict, and how it was complicated by economic factors and patterns of population distribution.
