From the Author:
WOMEN OF COURAGE-Perfect for quiet reflection, group study
Through the ages, there have been many women with stories we can look back upon and remember, reflect on and be inspired by. The six themes discussed in this book--faith, love, patience, humility, vocation, and vision--are ones we don't often see openly reflected in contemporary "accomplished" role models on television or in the media. One of my goals in writing about these heroines of our faith was to bridge the distance between the people in the Bible/church history and the people of today, to inspire readers with the stories of ordinary women who courageously confronted extraordinary challenges and hardships. To provide additional heroes in and era that commonly equates a woman's success with the amount of money she earns, the way she looks, the house she lives in, the car she drives. The "average" woman today is called upon to balance career, church, and community involvement with the changing needs of her family and friends. Though we talk about the vanishing myth of the superwoman, her specter can still suddenly appear when we lose focus of our central calling by taking on too much--or, to be more specific, too many of the wrong things--too fast. Thankfully, on any given day, God promises to meet us where we are and never give us more than we can handle. Life is a separate walk for each of us. And, while we suffer when we try to compare ourselves with others, we can learn from observing. As you read Women of Courage, it's my hope that you will find fresh insight not only into the lives of familiar Bible characters, but concerning your own walk with Christ as well. Be strong! Take courage! The one who calls you is faithful to complete the task he has begun in you!
From the Back Cover:
Courage doesn't stem from our own resources. It comes from God, and shines its brightest when we recognize our utter dependence on him. Women of Courage gives us twelve role models whose courageous qualities we can emulate. They come from different cultures and walks of life, face different challenges, and live in times extending from ages past right up to today. But all of them possess one thing in common: uncommon courage. From Hagar, whose faith led to the realization of a divine promise, to Rosa Parks, whose humble determination shaped the course of modern civil rights history, the inner fortitude to fulfill God's purposes is boldly displayed by the women in this book. Author Debra Evans describes key moments in their lives and the lessons they contain, revealing character traits that can strengthen us in our own times of testing. As you read, you will discover a kinship with the women in this book. Their examples will inspire you, convict you, refresh your focus, and encourage you that by God's grace, you, too, can courageously fulfill God's intent for your life.
