Armchair astronauts can soar into outer space and join those who have journeyed far from Earth. Photographs from hundreds of U.S. and Russian space missions past and present vividly convey the remarkable experiences of traveling in a rocket ship--the trials and dangers, excitement and glory, and even what it feels like to sleep and eat upside down and live in a weightless, yet strong, body. Plus: speculation on future trips to more distant planets and galaxies.

Review:
After four decades of space travel and exploration, comparatively few human beings have ever escaped the bounds of Earth and experienced weightlessness for themselves; it is far from clear how many more ever will, though Bond is optimistic about the future of space stations and interplanetary expeditions. In the mean time, Zero G is a handy guide to what has been achieved and experienced thus far, a coffee- table book which explains how people eat, sleep and excrete in zero-gravitation--the presence of many candid photographs makes much clear that has hitherto been left somewhat vague. Bond is entertaining on the very different attitudes to hardship of the Americans and the Russians--the Russians tend to treat it as something to be endured with machismo, the Americans as something to be designed out of the system next time. We are taken through the details of space-walking and lunar- expeditions--tribute is also paid to the comparatively few victims of space travel. Bond assumes that the future holds the assembly of larger space platforms, perhaps further trips to the Moon and a manned trip to Mars:

"As for using the Moon as a test-bed, the Mars-direct supporters believe that any remote spot on Earth, or even a dedicated space station module, would do just as well. Wot ot s;acl of atmosphere.672-hour day, extreme temperatures and entirely different landscape and geological history, the Moon can hardly be said to resemble the much larger planet."

--Roz Kaveney

Synopsis:
Peter Bond shows how space systems work - not just how the rocket takes off, but what happens when the crew get into orbit, the details of eating and drinking, and how plumbing works in zero gravity. He reviews developments to the late 1990s, and looks to the future of space travel.
