Review:
"Excellent use is made of anecdotes in this book, and a lot of insight into our operations can be gleaned from them....Chemical-Biological Defense, U.S. Militray Policies and Decisions in the Gulf War would be an interesting library addition for most Chemical Corps soldiers because of its insight into the policies driving NBC doctrine and operational readiness. I think Mauroni's analysis of Gulf War Syndrome gives his book a much greater audience."-Parameters

"Al Mauroni has focused our attention on what may become a frontier of modern warfare. He goes deeply into the material, penetrating the shallow sound bites that have dominated this discussion. I learned a tremendous amount both about chemical defenses and chemical warfare. An outstanding contribution to the discussion of a major policy issue."-George Friedman Chairman, Strategic Forecasting LLC. Co-author, The Future of War
"Al Mauroni's unprecedented study of this little-known aspect of the Persian Gulf War is well written, illuminating and thorough. Superbly researched, this insightful work will become the standard text on contemporary chemical and biological defense challenges. Timely and important...the author has performed a notable service to our nation and our military. Strongly recommend for military leaders and concerned citizens."-Barry R. McCaffrey General, U.S. Army (Ret.)
From the Author:
The truth behind the Dept. of Defense's CB defense program
I started research on this book because I saw nothing in the current vast collection of Gulf War books that adequately addressed the issue of CB defense and what efforts were made to prepare our forces for this threat. Far from being a spectre of doom, Iraqi CB weapons could be countered with adequate training, modern CB defense equipment, and the specialists of the Army Chemical Corps. This book will illustrate massive logistics effort undertaken to equip the soldiers, the biodefense program effort, and the crash training program put together to man the Fox recon systems. This book should dispel the myths of lost CENTCOM logs and the Khamisiyah stories, correcting the record that, at least in this instance, DoD was right in stating that CB agents were not used in the Gulf War. But more importantly, this book demonstrates that if Iraq had used CB agents in January-February 1991, our forces would have survived and sustained combat operations in spite of that.
