The birth of the capital market revolution is difficult to locate precisely, but for many traders the first signs of change surfaced in German bond futures. Open outcry had survived every innovation in history, but time had finally caught up with it. The revolution had begun.  Today, a whole industry is shifting from the physical world to the virtual, and no one person or party's place in the trading chain is now assured. After the capital market revolution there will be no floor, no fixed exchange and nowhere to hide from the rallying cries of e-markets: liquidity! accessibility! transparency!

Review:
"Reform or die" is the bottom line according to author Patrick Young. At the dawn of the cyber age, the onslaught on traditional financial markets is underway and there is no place for Luddites. In the author's vision: "electronic trading will transform every global market, every government and affect every strata of society." Capital Market Revolution provides a thorough analysis of the move to electronic markets and its repercussions throughout the financial world.

The book takes a logical approach, beginning with a diagnosis detailing the problems of existing markets before delivering a prognosis for the future of e-markets. Young examines the consequences for the whole micro to macro spectrum, right from the individual broker and trader to exchanges, governments and entire nations. He contends that e-trading is creating a more level playing field, evidenced by the emergence of day trading. Despite his obvious enthusiasm, however, he does address the problems of electronic trading such as the issues of transparency and order manipulation.

With its descriptions of the personalities and antics of those involved, Capital Market Revolution has a novel-like appeal, and quotes from industry gurus create the semblance of an ongoing dialogue. Interspersed with anecdotal trading floor stories, Chapter 4 is particularly amusing and insightful.

In addition to those with financial and technical backgrounds, this book will appeal to anyone interested in the dynamics of change. Technophiles will feast upon it; technophobes will find it a highly disturbing experience. --Neelam Dongha

From the Author:
- The future of markets in an online world -
-

Capital Market Revolution is a book written by a compelling desire to illustrate the enormous process of upheaval currently brewing in financial markets. Financial markets are creating both the greatest risks and the greatest opportunities in centuries thanks to the massive changes being made by the impact of digital technology.

If you want to understand just how the world is changing as a result of the development of electronic cash, and the increasing pressure upon financial intermediaries, then this is the book for you. I have worked hard to make Capital Market Revolution as accessible as possible for all readers regardless of whether or not you have a financial or IT background.

Current and impending developments in finance from digital technology will impact upon all our finances. Needless to say, if you are a trader, broker or other financial professional, then I really do feel you must read this book.

However, don't take just my word for it. Capital Market Revolution is already proving vital reading in the boardrooms of leading financial organisations throughout the world. Moreover, Capital Market Revolution went straight into the number one spot in the City of London's largest financial bookshop on the day it was launched. LIFFE, London's leading derivatives exchange have so far ordered 100 copies for their senior management. Indeed, LIFFE's Executive Chairman Brian Williamson said of "Capital Market Revolution:"

"It is bang up to date, prescient and ruthless. No broker, trader or exchange official will fall asleep over this book - he will lie awake worrying."

Phil Bruce, Managing Director of Strategy and Planning at the London Clearing House noted "If ever there was a time of threat to the old money and a time of opportunity for new money, this is it. Viva Patrick Young!"

Dr. Marc Faber, the Hong Kong based Editor of the "Doom, Boom and Gloom report" stated: "This is a thought-provoking and even scary book - because revolutions upset and destroy established orders. Capital Market Revolution is well worth a read for anyone who wants to understand how current developments and progress in capital markets will punctuate the economic equilibrium and lead to new winners and massive creative destruction of the old order."

Rory Collins, former Director of Information Technology at the Australian Stock Exchange and now Chairman of E-brokers Sanford Secutiries, is even more succinct, stating:

"Capital Market Revolution is the most entertaining treatment of a very real revolution. Nobody near a screen can afford to miss it."

Meanwhile, the London Metal Exchange CEO bought 20 copies at the London launch party for his Board of Directors to read ahead of a Board meeting to discuss the market's future strategy...

I hope you will find Capital Market Revolution a thought provoking read and a help in dealing with the most radical upheaval in financial markets in several centuries. The opportunities are out there. I believe Capital Market Revolution gives you the best chance to spot them in advance.
