A thrill-a minute ride set in the days of Spanish colonialism in California, where thugs and greedy tyrants try to wrest every penny from peasants . . . and the one hero who defends the common man is the mysterious masked stranger who calls himself Zorro--The Fox! The first Zorro story appeared as a 5-part serial in All-Story Weekly, a famous American pulp fiction magazine, starting in the August 9, 1919 issue. In a case of fortunate timing, Douglas Fairbanks, the silent movie star, was in the process of trying to change his image at the time, and he chose Zorro as his next starring role. In 1920, when the romantic swashbuckler debuted, it set movie box office records. Riot police had to disperse the huge crowds that showed up at the New York opening. Zorro entered the public consciousness and is now a part of popular culture, the same as such heroes as Superman, Tarzan, and The Lone Ranger. The rest is history.

Synopsis:
This wonderful series is a quick way into a range of exciting stories, from the chilling tale of "Frankenstein", to the gripping adventure of "Treasure Island" and the powerful animal story of "Call of the Wild". Fast-moving and accessible, each story is a shortened, dramatically illustrated version of the classic novel, which loses none of the strength and flavour of the original. Who is the masked man that haunts the streets of old Los Angeles? He is mysterious, dashing and very brave - a foe of the cowardly Captain Ramon, friend of the poor and dispossessed, and lover of the beautiful Lolita. They know him only as Zorro, master of the flashing blade, but what is his real name, and what is his relationship to Don Diego?
About the Author:
Johnston McCulley was a newspaper editor before he became the prolific author of stories from crime thrillers to westerns. He introduced Zorro in the pulp magazine "All Story Weekly" in 1919, and continued writing Zorro stories until his death in 1958.
