In a literary study of what makes an ordinary person an athlete, the author of People with Dirty Hands journeys coast to coast to present close-up profiles of gym teachers, geriatric surfers, a triathalon runner who always comes in last, and others who demonstrate that one can be athletic without being a good athlete. 25,000 first printing.

From the Author:
You don't have to be the sweaty type to read this
I began writing this book when I married a man who had always played games and is still looking for someone to play them with. With a background of no athletic talent I was ill-suited for the challenge, but found that my garden writing helped. I had always been fascinated with what people do with the plot of land in their back yard, especially when the Martha-Stewart-ness is not at issue. Similarly, if your body is the plot of land you were born with, neither miserable nor perfect, what would you decide to do with it if you had no self-consciousness, no urge to trim those thighs, ladies? Everyone in this book had a wonderful answer to that. No one was "pushing the envelope, dude."
