This new collection brings together First Love, The Calamative, The End and The Expelled; these four novellas are among the first major works of Beckett's decision to use French as his language of literary composition. Rich in verbal and situational humour, they offer a fascinating insight into many of the issues which preoccupied Beckett all his working life. As the first novella reveals, nobody writes with quite such cruel and unnervingly clever wit as Beckett...

From the Publisher:
This is part of a series of twelve short volumes brought out
ten years after the great writer's death, containing the best of the
shorter writing, ranging from early work to his final writings. All have
covers with the photographs of Samuel Beckett taken by the Irish
photographer John Minihan, which, catching the author in different moods,
have become classics on their own.
From the Back Cover:
Translated from the original by the author, `Premier Amour' is one of his earlier post-war novella. Following `Watt' and preceding `Molloy', `First Love' contains much of Samuel Beckett's special brand of black humour. The narrator, expelled on the death of his father from his room, takes refuge on a bench by a canal, meets a woman who takes him home and the events that follows are hilariously terrible. A comic and poignant, erotic and devastating novella.

Written in 1946, in what he later called 'a frenzy of writing', these four novellas - First Love, The Calmative, The End and The Expelled - are among the first substantial works resulting from Beckett's decision to use French as his language of literary composition. Richly humorous, they offer a fascinating insight into preoccupations which remained constant throughout the work of a writer who transformed the art of the novel and contemporary theatre. He brings forth a body of beauty.'Harold Pinter Includes the novellas "First Love", "The Calamative", "The End" and "The Expelled".
